For Preservation Ohio has a 37 year history of traveling to all corners of the state to assist in local preservation efforts, share information, and to build a statewide network. Here are just a few of the places we have been over the last few years.

FEBRUARY 2020 TO PRESENT

Our most recent visit took place on October 16, 2021 to the endangered South Dormitory at the former Ohio State School for the Blind in Columbus, where we met with local advocates. We also held a Board meeting near the home of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation. Click image twice for a larger version.

On August 8, 2021, we visited the Hessler Road neighborhood immediately adjacent to Case Western Reserve University east of downtown Cleveland. Neighborhood advocates are concerned about incompatible new development; Hessler Road was the city’s first historic district. Click image twice for a larger version.

Northeast Ohio was on the agenda on June 26, 2021, as several POers traveled to Cuyahoga Falls to visit with advocates for the Keyser-Swain Farmhouse. The endangered structure has now been targeted for retention as part of a new parks development. Click image twice for a larger version.

On June 2, Board & Staff toured one of the former Westinghouse buildings north and east of downtown Mansfield, which awaits a future which could involve renovation for adaptive reuse.

Preservation Ohio Board and Staff visited Ashland on April 24 to visit the endangered Hess & Clark complex north of downtown, which had been nominated to the 2021 List of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites. Other local historic resources were also visited. Click image twice for a larger version.

On Saturday, September 19, 2020 we visited with the Arcanum Preservation Society and local government officials for a tour of the Arcanum Town Hall & Opera House, which was also listed on the 2020 List of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites. Click image twice for a larger version.

We visited the city of Shelby in Richland County at the invitation of their Historic Preservation Commission. After attending the dedication of their downtown historic marker, we visited several buildings awaiting or having done renovation.

Members of the Preservation Ohio Board of Trustees and guests had the opportunity to visit the interior of the Richwood Town Hall & Opera House on July 16, 2020. The 1890 brick structure was built on a monumental basis for a small Ohio village, and has served in many roles during its 130 year history — opera house, town hall, movie theatre, and fire department. On July 11, 2020, we were again able to meet in person, with appropriate social distancing and other health measures in place, as we traveled to the village of Crestline in Crawford County. We met there with local government leaders and discussed several current and hoped-for renovation projects. Click image twice for a larger version.
