The Ohio Department of Development today announced building owners across the state can start the application process to help preserve the historic buildings in their communities. The Intent to Apply period for Round 32 of the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program is now open. The program provides a tax credit to help incentivize the preservation of historic buildings in Ohio.
“Championing the preservation of our state’s history is not just an investment; it’s a commitment to the soul of our communities,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development. “Within the walls of historic buildings lies an irreplaceable character and heritage. Our aim is to empower Ohioans to safeguard these treasures, ensuring the enduring legacy of the past while igniting fresh possibilities for the future.”
The Intent to Apply is due by 5 p.m. Feb. 15 and is available online at development.ohio.gov/historic. Interested applicants must submit an intent to apply to be eligible to submit an application. Applicants must also request a pre-application meeting with the State Historic Preservation Office by 5 p.m. Jan. 31.

The Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program is administered in partnership with the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office. The State Historic Preservation Office determines if a property qualifies as a historic building and that the rehabilitation plans comply with the United States Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
The tax credits assist private developers in rehabilitating historic buildings in downtowns and neighborhoods. Through 31 rounds of the program, tax credits have been approved for 673 projects to rehabilitate more than 917 historic buildings in 91 different Ohio communities. The program is projected to leverage more than $9.84 billion in private development funding and federal tax credits directly through the rehabilitation projects.
