The Ohio Local History Alliance’s Annual Meeting is set to take place on October 6-7 at the Quest Conference Center in Columbus. This year’s theme, “History as Necessity,” emphasizes the importance of collecting, sharing, and commemorating Ohio’s local history. Here’s a closer look at what attendees can expect from this significant event.

Registration and Awards

Registration is now open! Those interested in attending can register online or via mail using the form in the conference brochure. The registration deadline is September 22, so be sure to secure your spot soon.

The Alliance will also present its Outstanding Achievement Awards at the Annual Meeting. More information on the awards and categories can be found on the Awards page.

Keynote Address by Chief Glenna Wallace

The highlight of the event will be the lunch and keynote address by Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Chief Wallace, first elected in 2006, has been a prominent figure in the community, contributing to various tribal developments and initiatives.

Born in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, Chief Wallace’s early years as a migrant worker shaped her values and work ethic. She has dedicated 38½ years to education, serving in various roles at Crowder College, Neosho, Missouri. As chief of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, she has overseen significant progress, including the construction of new buildings, road construction, and the growth of land holdings from 400 acres to more than 2500.

Her efforts extend to Ohio’s homelands, where she has played a vital role in seeking World Heritage nomination for mounds in Ohio, obtaining a cemetery for the burial of human remains, and modernizing Ohio burial laws.

History Marketplace: Sharing and Networking

The History Marketplace, scheduled from 8 am to 3 pm, offers a unique opportunity for attendees to share their organization’s activities and accomplishments. Unlike the Alliance’s regional meeting, there’s no two-minute time limit, allowing for more in-depth discussions and networking.

Vendors of goods and services for history organizations will also be present, providing solutions tailored to the needs of history enthusiasts and professionals. Advanced registration is required for this segment, and space is limited, so be sure to register early.

A Gathering of History Enthusiasts

The 2023 Ohio Local History Alliance Annual Meeting promises to be an enriching experience for all attendees. With a focus on the necessity of history in our lives, the event offers a platform for learning, networking, and celebrating Ohio’s rich heritage.

Whether you’re a history professional, enthusiast, or simply curious about Ohio’s local history, this event is an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations. Don’t miss out on this chance to be part of a community that values and preserves the past for future generations. Register today and join the conversation on how history is not just a subject but a necessity.
