Preservation Ohio has been the home of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites since 1993.

Each year, the PO Board solicits nominations from all across the state. Typically, they arrive from local preservation organizations and other local advocates; property owners; and interested individuals. They tend to cover a wide variety of historic sites, each one serving as an example of potential loss that would be felt locally, regionally, or even statewide.

This year’s nomination process was truly exceptional. More nominations came in more quickly than ever before and so, for the first time in recent memory, the nomination deadline was not extended. After April 1, those submissions have been collected in one place, photos attached, and sent out to members of the PO Board.

It is currently envisioned that the selection of the 2024 List of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites will take place during the Board’s monthly meeting this coming Monday.

As we shared recently on Facebook, following are some insights into this year’s pool of nominations:

  • Included are downtown buildings, industrial buildings, a “Streamline Moderne” building, markers and statues, a historic district, industrial relics, collegiate structures, houses, schools, and religious buildings.
  • For the very first time in recent memory, nominations were received for sites in all of Ohio’s “Three C” communities – Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
  • The smallest incorporated community represented has less than 600 residents.
  • Two of the nominations have previously been on the Most Endangered List. One of those was included on the list in the early 2000s.

On Monday, the Board will also choose the date when the 2024 List will be announced. That information will be conveyed on our Facebook Page.
