A possible snowstorm was on the minds of Preservation Ohio Board and Staff on Sunday, but instead tolerable temperatures and mostly dry conditions prevailed. The result was a wonderful opportunity to discuss ongoing work of the organization and also to meet the people and places of Ashtabula County.
The day began with a regular Board meeting held in the Dining Room of The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Regular agenda items were joined by interesting discussions on communications, programming, and the upcoming nomination period for the 2019 List of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites.
During the meeting, Richard Dana, an attorney from Austinburg, was voted onto the Board. Richard is a historian and preservationist with a particular passion for Underground Railroad history.
After the Board meeting, attendees traveled a handful of miles east along the southern short of Lake Erie to the historic Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum in Ashtabula. The Hubbard House, constructed in 1833, is a documented Underground Railroad station and sits on the shore of Lake Erie.
Board and Staff took a brief tour of the house, which contains numerous period furnishings and a number of Hubbard family and Ashtabula County history displays.
After the tour, the workshop “Tools to Sleuth Old Houses and Antiques” was presented by Larry Frimerman. The event was co-sponsored by the Hubbard House, Ashtabula County Metroparks, and Preservation Ohio. A larger-than-expected crowd filled the meeting area of the Museum.
