Unlocking the hidden gems of Ohio’s rich history and architecture is the goal when Ohio Open Doors returns, spanning the period between September 6 and September 15, 2024. Spearheaded by the Ohio History Connection in collaboration with partners, this biennial celebration invites locals and tourists alike to delve into the stories and splendor of the state’s most significant landmarks and buildings.

Unveiling Heritage and History

Launched in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, Ohio Open Doors embodies the spirit of discovery and appreciation for the architectural and historical treasures scattered throughout the Buckeye State. From grand mansions and hallowed halls to the hidden corners of Ohio’s storied past, this event offers a unique opportunity to experience the living history that shapes our community today.

A Gateway to the Past

During the 10-day celebration, various historic sites and architectural marvels will throw open their doors, offering special tours and programs. Diana Welling, Director of the State Historic Preservation Office at the Ohio History Connection, emphasizes, “Ohio Open Doors shares stories of important landmarks and interesting places right in our communities, highlighting the history and unique nature of some of Ohio’s most treasured sites.”

Join the Celebration

Organizations and landmark owners are encouraged to participate by hosting events that are free and open to the public. This initiative not only stimulates interest in Ohio’s cultural and architectural heritage but also fosters community engagement and pride. The deadline for event registration is August 1, ensuring a wide array of experiences for attendees, from in-person tours to live virtual discussions.

Support for Hosts

To aid in the success of these events, the Ohio History Connection offers stipends, promotional materials, and publicity resources. Hosts can benefit from marketing cost stipends, arts-related stipends for adding a cultural dimension to their events, and a comprehensive online kit to ensure their offerings capture the public’s imagination.
